Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) synthesized by thermal decomposition of lanthanide precursors in oleic acid and 1-octadecene. The size can be tunable. The current smallest size is around 10 nm. These UCNPs can be excited by near infrared lasers (either 980 or 808 nm) to emit visible or ultraviolet emission. They are best used for biological applications, such as bioimaging, bio-sensing and drug delivery. Moreover, a thin layer of shell can be grown epitaxially on the surface of the core UCNPs to enhance their UC emission by hundreds of folds
